This course follows the NYS Algebra 1 curriculum.  The content of the course provides a thorough college preparatory coverage of algebra. All students are scheduled to take the Algebra Regents in June.  Students are introduced to the foundations of algebra, solving first and second-degree equations, polynomials, rational expressions, factoring, radicals, functions, data analysis and probability.  Students studying algebra will be able to:

  1. Communicate mathematical ideas correctly in oral and written form.
  2. Read for comprehension, demonstrating conceptual understanding.
  3. Make mathematical connections to other subjects and real-life situations.
  4. Confidently problem solve by thinking critically, logically and analytically.
  5. Use technology to confirm and enhance analytical techniques presented.
  6. Acquire the mathematical skills necessary to be successful in future math classes.
  7. Use technology to analyze, solve and visualize mathematical concepts.

This course follows the NYS Geometry curriculum.  All students will take the Geometry Regents exam in June.   The Geometry class provides a comprehensive course that is concrete and visual.  The curriculum focuses on tools of geometry, reasoning and proofs, parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles, properties of triangles, polygons, similarity, right triangles, transformations, area, volume, properties of circles and constructions.  Students studying Geometry will be able to:

  1. Develop logical thinking through proofs.
  2. Use deductive reasoning to form connections between different geometric principles.
  3. Relate new concepts to previously learned concepts.
  4. Use algebraic concepts in a geometric setting.
  5. Use visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric modeling to solved problems.

***Incoming freshman that score an 88 or higher on the Algebra Regents Exam will be considered for placement in Geometry.***

This course follows the NYS Algebra 2 curriculum.  The Algebra 2 class provides a comprehensive college prep class that picks up where Algebra 1 concluded.  All students are scheduled to take the NYS Algebra 2 Regents exam in June.   The main concepts taught are functions, linear systems, quadratic functions/equations, polynomial functions, rational functions, radical functions, exponential/logarithmic functions, sequences/series, conic sections, probability and statistics and trigonometry.  Students studying Algebra 2 will be able to: 

  1. Apply fundamental concepts learned in previous courses to new topic.
  2. Develop a strong understanding of patterns, relations, and functions.
  3. Use algebra to represent and explain mathematical relationships.
  4. Demonstrate the relevance of algebraic problem solving to the real world.
  5. Use technology to analyze, solve and visualize mathematical concepts.

This course is a college level math class.  Students who qualify may receive college credits through St. John’s University.  College Algebra/ Pre-Calculus provides a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for higher level math classes.  Concepts covered in this course are:  functions, quadratic functions, polynomial functions, trigonometry, exponents, logarithms, systems of equations and matrices.  Students taking College Algebra/Pre-Calculus will be able to:

  1. Apply previously learned concepts to new concepts.
  2. Use technology to visualize, solve, analyze and clarify mathematical concepts.
  3. Make mathematical connections to other areas of study and real-life situations.
  4. Problem solve by using critical and logical thinking.

This course is a college level math class.  Students who qualify may receive college credits through St. John’s University. College calculus prepares students for higher level math courses. This course covers advanced, higher level mathematical concepts such as limits, derivatives, advanced derivatives, applications of derivatives and integration.   Students enrolled in this course will be able to:

  1. To build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving that involves techniques of calculus using a variety of strategies.
  2. Demonstrate mastery of the language of mathematics by expressing mathematical ideas precisely using correct mathematical notation.
  3. Understand the fundamental mathematical ideas in the concepts and applications of calculus, rather than manipulations and memorization.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to express functions, concepts, problems, and conclusions analytically, graphically, numerically, and verbally and to understand how these are related.

This course is a college level advanced placement course.  Students placed in AP Calculus will take the AP exam administered in May.  Students that qualify may receive college credits.  AP Calculus offers a challenging and fast paced curriculum that prepares the student for higher level math classes.  Concepts covered in AP Calculus are limits, differentiation, application of differentiation, integration, logarithmic function, exponential functions, other transcendental functions, applications of integration.  Students studying AP Calculus will be able to: 

  1. Develop strong, analytical and technical problem-solving skills.
  2. To build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving that involves techniques of calculus using a variety of strategies.
  3. Demonstrate mastery of the language of mathematics by expressing mathematical ideas precisely using correct mathematical notation.
  4. Understand the fundamental mathematical ideas in the concepts and applications of calculus, rather than manipulations and memorization.
