Gabriella Sawa's '23 internship with the SI District Attorney's Office

My name is Gabriella Sawa and I am a rising Senior at Saint Joseph Hill Academy High School. When I am older, I hope to become a lawyer, possibly a politician.

And so, this summer I was chosen to intern at Staten Island District Attorney (DA) Michael McMahon’s office. For about 6 weeks I, along with other selected NYC high school students, spent our days canvasing the east shore of Staten Island. In working to combat a high opioid association and overdose rate, we spread awareness for the Richmond County DA’s Staten Island HOPE program by reaching over 7,000 homes in neighborhoods including New Dorp and Woodrow.

Over a lunch with the other interns, I even had the privilege to speak with Michael McMahon himself. I learned of his journey to becoming a District Attorney, what it was like growing up in Staten Island, and what programs he plans to initiate.

Overall, I am very grateful for being able to take part in the program, and furthering my interest in law. Being able to help my community is very important to me, and having the opportunity to reach so many people is a big privilege.
