Hill Proudly Presents Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella as 2021 Fall Musical
St. Joseph Hill Academy High School Drama Club Proudly Presents Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella
STATEN ISLAND, NY- Nov 16, 2021-- The St. Joseph Hill Academy Drama Club will proudly return to the stage with their animated presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella this week on November 18-21, 2021! Hill’s Drama Club will breathe new life into this timeless fairytale filled with enchantment, elegance, and excitement.
Ms. Samantha Hermansen is making her Hill debut this Fall 2021 as the Director and Choreographer of St. Joseph Hill Academy High School’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. Before its closing, Ms. Hermansen was the Director and Choreographer of St. John Villa Academy’s “Aida” and “High School Musical'' alongside her talented friend and colleague, Mr. Robert Butler. Ms. Hermansen and Mr. Butler teamed up again this year at Hill with Mr. Butler as the show’s Musical Director.
Ms. Hermansen has spent her career in the performing arts. Aside from her time at St. John Villa Academy, she is the Director at Wagner College’s Actor Children’s Theatre (ACT) program and conducts private vocal and acting coaching. Ms. Hermansen is proudly a member of numerous community theater companies on Staten Island. Her past credits include Ms. Hannigan in Annie (In the Wings Productions) and Sally Bowles in Cabaret (GLT). She has also done various professional work throughout the tri-state including serving as a part of Kill-Her Entertainment where she has been fortunate to work with Nikki Lauren. Ms. Hermansen is also a proud supporter and member of the Minty Organization.
“When you believe in the impossible, anything is possible. We have freshmen that have never done a show before and seniors that have to take charge when they last left the stage as sophomores. The magic of this show is that everyone is working from the bottom up together,” said Ms. Hermansen.
“I am thrilled to be at Hill and am grateful to my friends and family for always supporting me along each journey. Special thanks to Ashley, Maria Elena, Alina and Kerrin for helping make this show possible in each of your own creative ways. Thank you to Mrs. Lisa Riccardi for all her hard work and dedication behind the scenes. Thank you to Mrs. Maria Molluzzo for making this all possible and trusting in my craft. And a special thank you to my cast and crew... if you believe, you will achieve and succeed!”
Hill High School Principal Mrs. Maria Molluzzo shared, "After all we have been through since March 2020, including not having a musical last Fall, it is exciting and fitting that this year's musical, Cinderella, transports us to a magical, mystical world. We could all use a night of escape and this production will do that for our audiences. The pandemic has taught the cast and crew to never stop dreaming. They are more motivated than ever to put on the best show they can. It is wonderful to see our Performing Arts students back in their element."
This is St. Joseph Hill Academy’s first Fall Musical since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Hill Drama Club did have an outdoor performance in the 2020-2021 school year. “The Audition” was performed at Hill’s Performing and Visual Arts Showcase in June 2021 with an original script by recent Hill graduate Emily DeChristine ‘21 and directed by Hill Humanities and Performing Arts teacher Ms. Donna D’Ermilio.
Ms. D’Ermilio started her career at St. Joseph Hill Academy High School and assisted Sister Raimonde with Hill’s Performing Arts Program in 1977. Ms. D’Ermilio worked on a total of 43 Hill productions but stepped down as Director this year due to personal reasons. However, Ms. D'Ermilio is still incredibly active in Hill's Performing Arts Program beyond the Humanities classes she teaches. Ms. D’Ermilio is working with the Hill Singers on upcoming performances including the Christmas Coffeehouse in December and their Spring Concert in April. She also coordinates the Hill Singers closely with the Music Club and will direct the annual Performing and Visual Arts Showcase this Spring.
“I am excited to see Hill’s production of Cinderella. It’s wonderful that there is a show going on that follows in our Hill traditions. I know the girls well and there is a lot of excellent talent on the stage,” said Ms. D’Ermilio.
This is the fourth St. Joseph Hill Academy High School production of Cinderella. It was the Fall Musical in 1982 (directed by Sister Raimonde with Ms. D’Ermilio as the Music Director), 1997 (directed by Ms. D’Ermilio and choreographed by Ms. Loretta O’Hara), and again in 2007 (directed by Ms. D’Ermilio and choreographed by Ms. Loretta O’Hara). Hill’s 2021 production is based on the 2013 adaptation for Broadway. The previous Hill productions of the show were based on the original musical written for television.
“It is thrilling to return to our own stage to perform for the Hill community,” said Antonia Bongiorno ‘22, President of the SJHA Drama Club who will play the starring role of Cinderella in this production.
Ms. Hermansen was interviewed by St. Joseph Hill Academy High School student Bailee Webb ‘25 for the school’s newspaper, “The Summit.” When asked what her favorite scenes are from Hill’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Sam answered, “I think the transformation of Cinderella’s dress… and when we start dancing on the floor near the audience… are such beautiful moments.”
In the two years since there has been a live production, St. Joseph Hill Academy has continued to make investments in our Performing Arts Program. Following a complete renovation, this will be the first year the SJHA Drama Club can fully utilize the Academy’s new Performing Arts Studio as their backstage during a live production. The Studio includes full wall mirrors, mounted lighting, mirrored makeup and hair stations along with storage cubbies for the students to keep their belongings, racks for costumes and a closet for props. And thanks to a generous benefactor, SJHA has an entirely new full sound and lighting system in the Auditorium.
The cast for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella are rehearsing tirelessly and feel passionately about the performance. Patricia “Patsy” McFeely ‘22 will play Madame. Patsy said, “my favorite song is ‘A Lovely Night’ because it is a really happy song. It is upbeat and energetic and I just love the number so much because we get to dance. I am so excited for Theater to be back. Please come see our show!”
